Sewing Can Be Fun

Sewing can be fun, however I do get the odd question thrown at me regarding pattern cutting and using patterns.

For me, I see them as large jigsaws and I can assure you that is exactly what they are.

When you first buy your pattern, you take out the guide and have a good look at it, then you look at the tissue pattern and decide what size you are likely to use, I usually give myself an extra ¼ inch leeway that makes sure that if there is any errors in cutting it can be rectified easily also it avoids tears – that is for me anyhow.  However others may do it differently. It is your choice at the end of the day.  Even when cutting the pattern on the material I usually allow some extra just to give me room to manoeuvre – we are not exact sizes none of us, so it makes sense to give a little generosity for yourself.  You can always cut it down but you cannot add to it once it is cut out – it would need to be a complete new cutting on new material which can work out quite expensive.

For my rule of thumb I do tend to be generous with myself to date I have not made anything that has not fitted me to my shape, but perhaps not the size exact on the pattern as with all things you do need to consider your own shape.

For guidance on what kind of shape you are and what kind of clothes you could make for yourself and or buy for yourself I would highly recommend the Trinny and Susannah “The Body Shape Bible”.  I have found it to be a very useful tool.

Learning to use your sewing machine can be tricky especially if you have never used one before, here is something that will really help you achieve your wonderful creations.  Do not be afraid to ask for help and always check the manual for any problems which may occur, I have found that it is usually the tension which can cause a problem and a badly threaded needle can also cause trouble.
New skills are a challenge and fun.

I hope that I have been able to help you achieve a more open mind towards learning to be creative in your home, for your friends and family and of course you primarily.

I have had hours of fun looking into what I can make and create and I really still enjoy being creative and look forward to many more years of creativity with my precious sewing machine.
